The New Ritz-Carlton Reserve of Papagayo
By Silvanna Pacheco, June 20th, 2025.
For those planning a luxurious escape to Costa Rica’s North Pacific Coast, the Nekajui Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Papagayo is the newest destination. Opened in February 2025, this exquisite property has already gathered significant international recognition, making it onto Condé Nast Traveler’s prestigious 2025 Hot List, the only Central American property to do so.
Nekajui, meaning “lush garden” in the Indigenous Chorotega language, is the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Central and South America. it is nestled within the 1,400-acre Peninsula Papagayo, a private and upscale resort community renowned for its pristine natural beauty that includes crystal-clear waters and abundant wildlife.
The resort is strategically perched on a forested hill, providing stunning panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Guests can witness spectacular sunsets from various vantage points, including a unique suspension bridge, a serene poolside terrace, or the privacy of their own room balconies.
Each guest gets their own Manzu (meaning “friend” in Chorotega), who will help them arrange restaurant or cabana reservations. Terraced pools, one for families and another for adults, cascade down the wooded hillside, while a hot tub offers a prime sunset vantage point.
Nekajui offers a range of ocean view accommodations designed for ultimate comfort and privacy. Guest rooms start at 872 square feet and these include one and two-bedroom suites. For a distinctive experience, guests can choose from three charming deluxe treetop tents and for larger groups they can choose to indulge in the four-bedroom Grand Villa or the expansive 10-bedroom villa.
The property also features 36 exclusive private residences, ranging from two to five bedrooms, ideal for extended stays or those seeking a more permanent retreat. Each accommodation is designed with luxury in mind, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass doors that blur the lines between indoors and out, private plunge pools, and refreshing outdoor showers.
The Papagayo resorts, including Nekajui, are renowned for their commitment to fresh, locally sourced ingredients in their cuisine. At the Ritz-Carlton you can start your day at Mirador with a delightful tray-to-table breakfast and breathtaking views. For a quick pick-me-up, Café Rincón serves up local coffee and fresh pastries. For an exquisite dinner, Puna offers incredible Peruvian dishes crafted by renowned chef Diego Muñoz. And for a relaxing bite or refreshing drink, Brisa is the perfect spot, flowing seamlessly with the infinity pools.
Beyond relaxation, Nekajui provides a wealth of activities such as zip-lining, mountain biking and even surfing at Witch’s Rock with professional SurfX instructors. Indulge in wellness at the Nimbu Spa, home to Central America’s largest hydrotherapy pool and unique treehouse-style treatment rooms. Guests can also have access to the championship 18-hole Arnold Palmer-designed golf course, shared with other esteemed resorts within Peninsula Papagayo, including the Four Seasons and Andaz.
Peninsula Papagayo’s dedication to environmental preservation is evident, with 70% of its land remaining protected, fostering a rich biodiversity. Guests can easily spot howler and white-faced capuchin monkeys, and even experience the mesmerizing bio-luminescent waters at night.
Prepare for a stay where every moment is a delight for your senses.
