Money
The unit
of currency in Costa Rica is the colon. In August of 1999,
there were approximately 290 colones to the American dollar,
but we expect an increase of 10 colones more on November 1999
(230 colones for one dollar) because of this devaluation and
accompanying inflation.
The
colon (co-lone) is clearly market, Coin come in denomination
of .50 cents,1,5,20,25,50,100, and bills of 50,100,500, 1000,
2000, 5000 and 10000. In the past we usually use bills of
5,10,20 but know is difficult to find.
In
some souvenirs and around the Plaza de la Cultura you will
found some people selling 5 colones bills. In some areas of
San Jose some people exchange dollar but is illegal and could
be dangerous.
